How to get out of credit card debts !

Friday, August 31 2007.  Filed under DIY Financial Planning.

Easy credit has made so many people got used to the idea of spend first and pay later. Enjoy now and suffer later. It is common to have people paying for stuff like new hand phones, holiday trips, stylish wedding photos, branded watches, fine dinning, Flat screen TVs and other household appliances using the ubiquitous credit cards. The best of way getting out of debts is of course not getting into it in the first place. Simple said then done right ?

The ‘Revolutionary’ idea is …. (drum roll…..)

When I really need a new hand phone, I will have to ask myself first the question “Do I have the cash to pay for it now ?” If I do not have enough of cash, then I will need to make do with the old junk until I have the cash. How to reduce outstanding credit card debts ? The strategy I would use would be ….

Step 1

I will work out the amount of cash I need to survive for the month. This amount can include a bit of entertainment money. The idea is to do a budget, rather than torturing myself. Then I will set aside the amount from my pay cheque and the balance all goes into the outstanding credit card loans.

Step 2

Add up all the debts from all the credit cards, the total amount will give me some perspective on the magnitude of the situation. Bursting the credit limit of one Gold Card usually means RM10,000 and a platinum means RM20,000, 2 Gold cards and a Platinum means RM40,000. If this amount is a shocker to me .. then it may just save me from bursting another card. But don’t fret! Be cool about it.

Step 3

Work out how long I need to settle all the debts, if I were to follow step One (above) diligently. Is it 6 months? It is 12 months? Is it 2 years? Is it 3 years ?. If the time required to payback is a shocker to me … then it is also a good lesson to me. But don’t fret! Be cool about it.

Step 4

Redeem all loyaty points if the amount is significant, and cancel all the current cards; stop the bleed. Before that, apply for new cards with balance transfer facilities that offer very low interest rate / processing fee. Transfer all the balance into these cards. This will …

a) help me to consolidate all the debts and to focus to pay them off

b) help me to have an installment scheme to discipline myself to pay them every month, before I spend on other things. That means, I will be paying off my debts first before I start spending my cash.

Step 5

Destroy all the balance transfer cards, once the transfer is done. Forget about new loyalty points and auto debit facilities. From now on, pay everything by cheque or cash. This will help me to be able to prioritize the bills to be paid. For example, if I only have the cash to pay for 3 out of 5 of the following bills, which one will I choose?

a) car insurance, b) handphone, c) Astro, d) gym subscription, e) credit card installment

I will probably ranking them in terms of priority, 1 being the most important, 5 being the least important.

Priority 1 Car insuranceIf I don’t pay the car insurance, I will risk getting summon by the authorities and it is risky to drive without an insurance.

Priority 2 Credit card installment If I don’t pay, the special interest rate for balance transfer will be cancelled and I will have to pay the 1.5% per month rate. I need to reduce my debt.

Priority 3 Handphone If I don’t pay, I will not have the convenience of calling friends / business clients. But I can use the fixed line to call if it is really important.

Priority 4 GymIf I don’t pay, I will not be able to work out in the gym. But I can always run around the housing estate or go to the park for the time being.

Priority 5 AstroIf I don’t pay, I will not have any entertainment. Since I may need to moonlight to pay for my debts, I probably would not be watching TV at all.

See ! By putting everything into auto debit will inadvertently make me pay for things indiscriminately. If I need to take out the purse or write a cheque each time I pay, I will be more conscious of how much money is leaving me, how much I have left in the purse or in the bank.

Step 6

Maintain a relentless debt reduction attitude.

a) I will seek out cache of money that I may have left lying around and bank in the money to reduce the credit loans. The money could be from coin boxes, inactive bank accounts, inactive unit trust accounts, and company expenses not claimed yet from my employer.

b) All unexpected income such as ‘ang pow’, money picked up from the street or while cleaning the sofa will have to be banked into the credit card loan account.

Step 7

Last but not least, find new sources of income, make something good out of this predicament. Making lemonade out of lemon.

The conclusion is, I will need to …

Consolidate the debts

Cut the plastics to stop the bleed

Pay back systematically & relentlessly

Use cash and cheque only

Find extra sources of income

An introduction to the 36 illnesses ….

Wednesday, August 29 2007.  Filed under Life Insurance.

The introduction …

36 Critical illnesses cover is also known as;

a)     Dread Diseases cover

b)     Crisis cover

c)     Living Assurance cover

Well…… a rose is a rose by any other name … They all meant more or less the same 36 diseases. Different insurance companies will use different names for them. Some choose to vary the definitions and/or covers a bit, so as to differentiate themselves from others, giving their sales person one more point to convince their customers, their policies is slightly better than the rest.

Of course, we all know there is no free lunch; every benefit has a cost in it. As consumers, we need to know exactly what we want, and we choose the plans primarily according to the major things we want to cover and the frills should be secondary. 36 Critical Illnesses (CI) can be grouped into 6 areas.

Equating the human body to a car is just for the purposes making this subject less morbid and easier to understand and to remember. I have no intention of making fun of these deadly fellows, I am sure if one of them were to fall in love with you … it will be no joke.

I hope my analogy will not make things worst for you. If you can’t find the connections between the illnesses and the car problems, please just ignore those words in purple italics.

a) Heart and Blood Circulation (7 out of 36) – these involve the heart (cardio) and the arteries and veins (vascular). Like the ‘car engine (pistons & plugs) and the fuel tube system’

b) Brain and Nervous System (15 out of 36) – these include all the illnesses and conditions that happens to the brain, the spinal cord and nerves that control the body and limbs. It is the ‘Car Electronics Control Unit (ECU) & wiring’

c) Major Organs (5 out of 36) – these involves the vital organs such as liver, lungs, kidneys, heart and bone marrow.  This is like ‘Changing of Engine parts such as engine block, radiator and oil filter, unclogging and replacing piston chamber valves’.

d) Chronic diseases (2 out of 36) – these are serious diseases that can happen at any part of the body. (Cancer and terminal illnesses). Maybe we can compare it to ‘VERY serious rusts on the body or engine of a car’.

e) AIDS (3 out of 36) – AIDS and HIV related. ‘err… salt water got into every part of the car, it is a matter of time …but don’t know when the rust will start, once start the deterioration of the chasis will be fast and soon the vehicle will have to be scraped’

f) Permanent damages (4 out of 36) – relating to hearing, speaking, seeing and serious burn. ‘Very rare vintage car with no spare parts available, once the head lights, horn, side mirror or chasis get really beaten up, there is no way to find parts or to repair’

The common official names for the 36 illnesses are ….

a) Heart and Blood Circulation (7)

The above listing is based generally on Great Eastern Life policy. I will explain a bit further in my later articles.

Let’s Do the Ark!

Monday, August 27 2007.  Filed under Personal Development.

There are times when we wished for courage, but do we ever get it ? In the movie ‘Evan Almighty’, it is said that when you wish for courage, the Great Spirit will not give you courage; instead the Great Spirit will give you opportunity to be courageous. In other words, you will have to pass through enough of ‘scary’ situation before you become courageous. Isn’t it logical?

Same goes with, when you wish for wealth; the Great Spirit will give you opportunities to acquire wealth. This is so much inline with the ‘Law of attraction’ mentioned in the show and book titled ‘the Secret’. So be careful of what you wish for, it will come true. Or rather be clear of what you wish for, or else opportunity is probably already knocking at your door now, but you can’t hear it or worst, you were caught undressed.

As a business person, I believe I must always be ready for the biggest deal of my life. Of course there are times, when I was caught without adequate preparations, and somehow I had to rise to the occasion, using whatever I resources I had at my disposal at that moment in time. If I succeed then it would be a sweet ending, but if I don’t, it would be an opportunity for me to get prepared for an even bigger deal. Opportunities usually are disguised as problems, don’t you agree ?

In the show, Congressman Baxter (Steve Carell) prays to the God to help him to change the world. His wife prayed for a closer knit family. One day, God (Morgan Freeman) appears and told him that a great flood is coming and he needs to build an Ark to save a pair of each animal and as many people as he could.

The poor fellow became the laughing stock among his neighbours, the congress and the entire nation. They all thought he went ‘gila’. His wife took the kids and left their new house in a car to back to the in-laws …. Sounds familiar to some of you ? Along the highway, she stopped by a restaurant for dinner. Then God appeared as a waiter and asks her why she looked so sad. After listening to her, the waiter explained……

When you pray for courage, God doesn’t just give you courage. He gives you the OPPORTUNITY to become courageous. When you pray for your family to become closer, God doesn’t give you that fuzzy warm feeling. Instead, you are given the OPPORTUNITY to become closer and stronger. After listening to the ‘waiter’, she felt that she had turn to back, because she realised that it is in this time of difficulty that lay the opportunity for the family to become closer. So she and the kids went back to Baxter to help him build the Ark. When Baxter asked God why was he CHOSEN to build the Ark, God replied that it was because he prayed to ‘Change the World’. ‘But how can I change the world?’ he asked. God replied, ‘We can all change the world by performing A RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS (ARK) everyday.

When you ask for confidence, God will not make you confident. Instead, you will be given opportunities to build your self confidence. Maybe, there is a chance for you to volunteer as a leader, give a speech, stand up to a bully etc…

If you want love, you will not have people coming up to you and give you hugs. Instead, you can start to notice opportunities where you can give your love and kindness to others. So, let’s change the world with one act of random kindness at a time…Let’s do the ARK!!!!
